Happy Christmas from Cloud Nine.

2010 was a good year for me. I won quite a few awards this year and finally managed to complete my first short story collection (more about that anon). I also finally got around to arranging the completion of my PhD thesis which I'm hoping will turn into some kind of book next year. In 2011 I have a new short play on at the Arcola Theatre in London, and my play, Leopoldville (which won the 2010 Papatango New Writing Award) will have its first reading in the US. I'm really looking forward to that.

The picture here is 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' by Dorothy Tanning. I saw this startling piece at the Tate Modern this year where it is one of the many Surrealist works in the Poetry and Dreams exhibition. Tanning was the wife of Max Ernst and as I've come to know her work I have to say I prefer hers to his. Have a great Christmas and a brilliant 2011!

  2. Thanks Michael. Same to you. Right now I'd give all the successes of 2010 to find my missing cat, Iggy. He went missing on December 13th on the day of the thaw and hasn't come back since. I've two other cats but we really miss little Iggy. Have a great break and a wonderful 2011.

  3. Hope Iggy returnst home safe and soon.

That's one of my favourite paintings but I've only ever seen it in books! First came across it when I was seventeen (same time as I discovered Stanley Spencer's work - whci I have seen in "real life"), hadn't seen anything like it before.

Well, congratulations on all your achievements and Happy New Year!

  5. Hi Jaki,

Bravo on such a wonderful year.

Don't cats just break our hearts as well as fill our hearts, keeping fingers crossed for Iggy's return, he may be sheltering somewhere till the snow clears up. When my cat, Siam, went missing, I remember thinking exactly like you
regarding a good fortune that came my way on the same day he went...
Happy New Year, Jaki and hope to hear soon the happy news of Iggy's return.

  6. Oh Rachel, I've published the typo here - will see if I can get it off on the moderation page. I like 'returnst' anyway - very Shakespearean. Thanks for the hopes for Iggy. Thanks Liz also. We've been doing a lot of looking, leafleting and the like. Hopefully he will come back soon. He is neutered and has gone away before but never for two weeks. Will let you know. Did Siam ever come home?

An excellent year for BELFAST GIRLS

In 2019 there were two magnificent productions of BELFAST GIRLS - and a reading of the play in Washington DC. BELFAST GIRLS premiered in August in Australia, at the Q Theatre in Queanbeyan, New SouthWales. Produced by Echo Theatre and directed by Jordan Best, this production did fantastically well and received a number of glowing reviews. I was so sorry to miss it and really hope that Jordan and the cast get to do it again. Here are some shots from this beautiful show: The next production was by the Swedish company, Batalj Scenkonst and this took place in Stockholm in November. This production marks the first production of the play in translation and luckily I was able to attend the opening night. Malin Erikson directed an absolutely stunning cast and I thought this was an incredibly beautiful show. Very physical and visual, with brilliant use of lighting and music. Even though I don't speak or understand Swedish I was completely moved by this show and really ho...

The Genesis of Belfast Girls

At the beginning of 2010, my play Leopoldville won the Papatango New Writing Prize. Based on a true story, the play is set in an Irish border town and explores a crime committed at the tail end of the recession of the 1980s. It took a year to write and by the end of that year, 2008, Lehman’s Bank had collapsed as had Anglo Irish Bank, plunging Ireland into another recession, from which, seven years later, it has still not recovered. The cast of this play is all male (five young men, one older male) –and in 2009 I began to think about writing something that would be the converse of this work: an all female play - a thought that grew especially during the London-based rehearsal and performance period of Leopoldville, when I considered that I needed a serious break from the testosterone-heavy environment I’d been in for months (the youths of my play are tough and violent and I’d already spent a year with them in my imagination!). I did no...
